Baseball Roundtable Branch B. Rickey ’67, president of the Pacific Coast League, talked baseball with Bob DiBiasio ’77, vice president of public relations for the Cleveland Indians; Ken Schnacke, president and general manager of the Columbus Clippers; and Roger Ingles, OWU’s athletics director and former Battling Bishop baseball coach. Award Reception Guests enjoyed a reception in the Ross Art Museum, prior to the presentation of the Branch Rickey Award. The art museum is hosting a special display of baseball memorabilia through February 20. During the event, OWU alumnus and Robinson Scholar Alex Aguilar ’08 and Branch B. Award Ceremony Rachel Robinson, widow of Major League Baseball legend Jackie Robinson and founder of The Jackie Robinson Foundation, was honored with Ohio Wesleyan University’s Branch Rickey Award for her “exceptional personal contribution and commitment to the goal of full equality for all.” President Rock Jones served as master of ceremonies for the event, which included remarks from OWU alumnus and Robinson Scholar Jaime Fuentes ’10. Fuentes and Branch B. Rickey ’67, grandson of Branch Rickey, were interviewed at the ceremony by WSYX-TV6’s Clay Hall. After the presentation, Jones announced that the award was being renamed the “Branch Rickey-Jackie Robinson Award presented by Ohio Wesleyan University.” The new name better reflects the legacy and partnership of these two men in breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier, Jones told the crowd. Heisler Lecture The highlight of OWU’s first Branch Rickey-Jackie Robinson Week was the Heisler Business Ethics Lecture delivered by Rickey’s grandson, Branch B. Rickey ’67, president of Minor League Baseball’s Pacific Coast League. The younger Rickey began his professional career with the Pittsburgh Pirates at age 17, while still pursuing his bachelor’s degree at Ohio Wesleyan. During his presentation, he discussed “More than Sport: The Branch Rickey-Jackie Robinson Legacy.” The event was sponsored by the Woltemade Center for Economics, Business and Entrepreneurship.
